Could you be self-sabotaging your own healing efforts unconsciously?

Our body has a fantastic ability to self-heal, but have you applied all the Self-Healing Practices you know and are you still sick?

There are 5 ways in which you might be subconsciously sabotaging your own self-healing process. In a nutshell:

  1. Using microwaves
  2. Dieting
  3. Taking dietary supplements
  4. Negative self-talk
  5. Not letting go of past hurts

1. Using microwaves

I have read a lot about microwaves, and I have come to conclude that it has been proven that they are bad for you because cooking with microwaves alters the field of the foods being cooked.

Paul Pitchford, in Healing with Whole Foods: Asian Traditions and Modern Nutrition writes that microwave cooking seems to damage the molecular integrity of the food, diminishing the subtle qi (life force).

Healing with whole foods book cover

He says that experiments reported in the British medical journal The Lancet, on December 9, 1989, demonstrate that microwave cooking alters food enough to cause, upon ingestion, “structural, functional, and immunological changes” in the body.

The report further states that microwaves transform the amino acid L-proline into D-proline, a proven toxin to the nervous system, liver, and kidneys.

Also, a 15-page article called The Hidden Hazards of Microwave Cooking, by Anthony Wayne and Lawrence Newell, shows evidence that microwave cooking is not natural, nor healthy, and is far more dangerous to the human body than anyone could imagine.

It is very well researched and eye-opening. These are some of the main takeaways:

  • Microwaving meat formed d-Nitrosodienthanolamines, a well-known carcinogen
  • Microwaving milk and cereal grains converted some of their amino acids into carcinogens
  • Thawing frozen fruits converted their glucoside and galactoside containing fractions into carcinogenic substances
  • Carcinogenic free radicals were formed in microwaved plants, especially root vegetables

Russian researchers also reported a marked acceleration of structural degradation leading to a decreased food value of 60 to 90% in all foods tested.

If you want to read a lot more about this please click here. This article contains all the scientific journals, books, and articles to reach the conclusion that microwaves are not good for you.

To conclude, you might be trying to heal from a specific illness but, if you are ingesting food that has been microwaved, you might be reducing your chances of getting adequate nutrients in your body to support your healing process.

PS. I have also read that microwaves are perfectly fine and there is absolutely no science behind these claims, for example, this article published by the National Library of Medicine.

I don’t use microwaves because I’m convinced they are not natural and do more harm than good; however, I believe we all need to do our own research and do what we feel intuitively guided to do.

I would never claim to know best or to have all the truth, but I want to provide my sincere concerns about using microwaves.

Please use your discernment when making any decisions.

2. Dieting

Eggs and bacon Food low carb

The topic of why dieting — in the context of restricting oneself to small amounts, or special amounts and types of food to lose weight — is not a good idea is too extensive to cover in this post.

You can find the scientific reasons why dieting doesn’t work and how to lose weight in my post How To Lose Weight Without Dieting; however, this post would not be complete if I didn’t list dieting as one of the issues with our health problems. This is, picking a specific diet hoping it has healing properties.

I have read many books and articles that assert how some diets can cure illnesses and help you lose weight quickly.

Some books recommend a vegan or raw plant-based diet as a sole or complementary diet/therapy.

Other books claim that if you have a specific disease (for example, some types of blood cancers), you could benefit from eating red meat.

There are a lot of mixed messages and confusing information out there.

When we are sick we are more vulnerable to believe that some treatment or plan is going to help us.

Please do not blindly follow anybody or any specific health system. We are not all the same, and the same disease can be caused by different reasons.

Follow your doctor’s directions and decide what is best for you. Some diets can do more harm than good, particularly when you are asked to “just juice,” or eliminate entire food groups like meat or fruit.

Annemarie Colbin, in her book Food and Healing,  has a very good point.

Food and healing book cover

She says that good food will nourish us without causing stress, allowing our immune system to spend its energy in healing.

Therefore, because our immune system can concentrate on other things, some diets will have healing effects.

I have also read in other books that fasting can also be a great healer for the same reason: our body can concentrate on repairing itself instead of spending time and energy with digestion and dealing with the stress of handling chemicals and poor nutritional foods.

Colbin also says that often it is not just what we eat, but also what we don’t eat, that helps us become healthy again.

She gives the example that a diet free of nuts, nut butters, soda pop, fried foods, mayonnaise, and dairy products does not “cure” acne; it just doesn’t cause acne, and therefore the body returns to normal and the acne disappears.

If you are following a strict diet in the hope of healing from a specific disease, please research it well to ensure you are not cutting nutrients from your diet that could be of benefit.

3. Negative self-talk. The Nocibo Effect.

You have probably heard and read how important it is to self-talk in a positive manner.

The closer we study the body, the more we discover the direct connection between how we think and how we feel.

I have written extensively about the power of positive daily affirmations

The power of our mind can work in two directions; in a positive and in a negative way because we come to believe what we are repeatedly told, or whatever we repeat to ourselves.

Negative self-talk will always work to our detriment; self-criticism, doubt, and in general mental stress (anger and heavy emotions) can alter our nervous system by releasing stress hormones which can affect the body in many ways: adjusting our breathing pattern, increasing our blood pressure, or muscle tension, etc.

You might have heard of the Placebo effect.

A placebo is a substance, such as a pill or a shot, that doesn’t contain any active medicine. The placebo effect occurs when this neutral treatment improves a person’s condition simply because the person has the expectation that it will be helpful.

You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind. Joyce Meyer

“You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.” — Joyce Meyer

The opposite of the placebo effect is a phenomenon called the nocebo effect.

If a doctor gives someone a placebo pill but tells them the side effect might be nausea and vomiting, studies have proven that the subjects actually vomited.

This is important to understand because focusing our mind (our attention) on sickness has been proven to make us sick.

In Mind Over medicine; Scientific Proof that You Can Heal Yourself, Dr. Lissa Rankin writes that the power of suggestion is powerful, and the mere suggestion that a patient may experience negative symptoms in response to medication (a sugar pill) may be a self-fulfilling prophecy.

In order to heal, we need to eliminate the negative and self-sabotaging thought patterns of the subconscious mind. By accessing that deeper mind, we can rewrite any negative beliefs and patterns that are blocking our ability to heal.

Visualization works very well to aid healing because visualizing a healthy body and recalling loving memories from the times when we were healthy will transmit healing frequencies all over our bodies.

Visualization is also a great tool for manifesting your desires.

Our mind and our thoughts are very powerful. Our mindset can aid healing much more than we realize.

4. Taking unprescribed dietary supplements

dietary pills

We assume dietary supplements, such as vitamins and minerals, herbs, sports nutrition, and weight management supplements are safe because they are often described as natural, but they can cause harm both directly – through drug interactions and because they may have dangerous ingredients – and indirectly, by delaying conventional care.

We believe we can trust the advice of some individuals and corporations because they have been selling them for a long time, like in a gym or a health shop, or we self-prescribe what we need by reading the label.

Please consider the following:

1. Some supplements are not as “pure” as the seller or the label claims them to be.

A number of well-known toxins have been found in herbal preparations, sometimes resulting in significant human injury.

Supplements are not regulated. There is no guarantee they contain what the package says.

Dr. Pieter Cohen, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School and an expert on the dietary supplement industry, found his patients started developing mysterious symptoms.

One woman went in with palpitations, sweating, and anxiety, but also feeling very tired. Another was rushed to the emergency room with kidney failure, and one man lost his job after his urine tested positive for amphetamines.

Cohen realized his patients were all taking weight loss pills known as rainbow diet pills.

He then sent the capsules off to a private lab for testing. The tests revealed amphetamines, thyroid hormones, diuretics, benzo-diazepines (tranquilizers), and antidepressants.

Cohen has written numerous articles. If you want to read more about Cohen’s work  you can visit The Harvard Clinical and Translational Science Center, and look under Harvard Catalyst profiles.

2. Sellers aren’t required to do research studies in people to prove that a dietary supplement is safe.
Supplements, like drugs, can also have side effects, and you can overdose on vitamins and minerals.

3. Taking dietary pills might pose a risk to special populations: children, elderly, pregnant women, people undergoing surgery, or people with impaired organ or immunologic function.

Even if you don’t fall into any of the above groups, always seek your doctor’s advice to determine if you need to take any pills. Self-medicating is dangerous.

Dietary Supplements Side effects

Paper that reads Medical side effects

A study published in the British Medical Journal revealed that additional calcium poses an increase in heart risk. Another study found that Vitamin E, which was originally thought to protect the heart, was later discovered to increase the risk for bleeding strokes.

The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) warns the public with very similar concerns: the active ingredients of many supplements can have dangerous side effects (or can make other medicines you are taking a lot less effective).

The HHS provides the following examples:

– Vitamin K can reduce the ability of the blood thinner Coumadin® to prevent blood from clotting.
– St. John’s wort can speed the breakdown of many drugs (including antidepressants and birth control pills) and thereby reduce these drugs’ effectiveness.
– Antioxidant supplements, like vitamins C and E, might reduce the effectiveness of some types of cancer chemotherapy.

The bottom line is, although supplements can be wonderful for your health, seek your doctor’s advice, read the ingredients list, and take supplements only as prescribed. If you don’t understand an ingredient, research it, and be satisfied that you know what you are taking into your body.

One last note about dietary supplements.

I went through a very sad phase when no amount of meditation or anything I was doing was getting me out of the hole I was in.

I was waking up sad, and I was going to bed sad. I was very depressed but I could not understand why. I had problems in my life for sure, but nothing to make me feel THAT depressed.

It turned out that I was low on magnesium. I started taking this Natural Vitaly Calm Magnesium supplement and I picked up tremendously just after 2 weeks. I felt incredibly better.

The conclusion I want to make is that you need to be careful not to self medicate but supplements can be fantastic for your health when needed and recommended by a doctor. (I am not a doctor and you should not take this post as advice from one).

Also, please note that not all supplements, even when needed, are made equally. Some contain nasty ingredients like corn syrup. Make sure to read the label before purchasing.

5. Not letting go of past hurts

Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got Robert Brault

“Life becomes easier when you learn to accept an apology you never got.” —Robert Brault

There is a lot that has been written about the effects of our mental state on our physical body, and several great books explain how our unresolved emotional issues appear in the body as disease.

One of the best books in this field is the classic You Can Heal Your Life, by Louise Hay.

In this field of thought, disease occurs when the body’s energy is not flowing smoothly.

Fear, hurt, resentment, hate, grief, anger, and jealousy vibrate at a very low level, which keeps our energy stuck.

For healing to occur, we need to heal our emotions so the flow of energy through the body can be restored.

Please note that I believe this is just one of five causes of disease. Not all sickness happens because of emotional issues. If you wish to read more: 5 Surprising Causes of Disease.

It is healing for our body and soul to seek and find forgiveness; we let go of ideas of revenge, we see a reduction in our stress levels and feelings of despair, our depression lifts, and our relationships improve.

It is also as important to forgive ourselves although I understand it is easier said than done. Every case is different, but if you are struggling to forgive yourself or someone else you might try to see if any of these help you:

  1. Please read: Pre-birth planning sessions: Our soul contracts before we are born
  2. Write a letter to God, your guide and angels (or Universe) and ask for help. This post has 9 ways you can ask the Universe for help.
  3.  Say this prayer, which I love and has worked for me really well. I read it in one of Diana Cooper’s books a long time ago but I can’t remember which one. I wrote it down and carry it with me. Her books have transformed my life.

Forgiveness Prayer by Diana Cooper

I forgive everyone who has ever hurt or harmed me, consciously or unconsciously, in this lifetime or any other, in this universe, dimension, plane, or level of existence or any other.
I offer them grace.

I ask forgiveness for everything I have ever done to hurt or harm another, consciously or unconsciously, in this lifetime or any other, in this universe, dimension, plane or level of existence or any other.
I ask for grace.

I forgive myself for everything I have ever done to hurt or harm another,
consciously or unconsciously, in this lifetime or any other, in this universe, dimension, plane or level of existence or any other.
I accept grace.

I am free. All chains and restrictions fall from me. I stand in my full power as a master.
X 3 (say all above statements 3 times)

So be it. It is done.
